Landlord’s worst nightmare: how an ‘educated bachelor’ who worked in an MNC turned their rented flat to filthy mess

We understand that you may have had experiences where the tenant has caused damage to the property or left it in a bad condition. get your tenancy profile today

Apartment hunting in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune can prove to be a challenging experience. The reason is, different landlords and housing societies have varying prerequisites they seek in a tenant. While some don't permit bachelors and single women, others don't allow guests to stay overnight.

Occasionally, one may come across absurd questions posed by prospective landlords. Some landlords even ask for a tenant's LinkedIn profile to assess their background and employment status. However, most stories we hear or read about pertain to a tenant's perspective and not that of the landlord.

Securing a place to rent as a bachelor is an arduous task as landlords prefer renting out their properties to families. Nevertheless, there is another side to this story as well. Recently, a man shared on Twitter photos of a flat that was rented out to a bachelor in Bengaluru, and how it was left in a deplorable condition.

Ravi Handa, a podcast host, shared the photos on Twitter, which he claimed he received from Reddit. He stated that the flat was left in this condition by an "educated bachelor" who worked in an MNC. The entire place looked like a dumping ground with numerous empty beer bottles scattered around everywhere. The kitchen appeared to be a complete mess, with waste lying around the slab, and the cabinets broken. With so much garbage inside the flat, it seemed like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time.

Here’s a look at some of the pictures that he shared:

On Reddit, a Bengaluru landlord had disclosed how he had rented his 2 BHK flat to an “educated bachelor” who worked at a “large MNC”. After paying rent for 3-4 months, the tenant suddenly disappeared and later called to demand the security deposit back. However, he was hesitant to hand over the flat properly, which raised suspicion.

When the landlord visited the flat, he was in for a shock as the place was filled with empty liquor bottles. The windows had been left open, allowing pigeons to enter and defecate everywhere. Additionally, there was a dirty mattress lying in the middle of the living room, and the kitchen and toilet were in a big mess.

“It’s a rare case; 98% of bachelors clean up after themselves,” commented one user. Another user said, “This is a one-off case. Also, all homeowners deduct one month's rent for painting and cleaning charges.”

However, he was hesitant to hand over the flat properly. After the landlord became suspicious, the went to visit the flat and was in for probably the biggest shock of his life. The entire place was filled with empty liquor bottles. The windows were open, which led to pigeons coming in and defecating everywhere. The kitchen and toilet were in a big mess. There was a dirty mattress lying in the middle of the living room.

The condition of the flat was disgusting.

“Rented my 2bhk flat in Marathahalli to a well educated bachelor working in a large MNC in outer ring road. Rent was 17k with deposit of 85k, guy paid rent for 3-4 months and disappearred for few months. He called me randomly to say he needs to vacate because he is in dire emergency and he needs deposit back asap. I decided to waive off some portion of the unpaid rent and return some portion of the security deposit, but he was hesitant to give handover properly. Something was very suspicious and decided to visit the flat and I see this condition, he left for his “home town” without even closing the windows. None of the people in the society noticed anything suspicious, but noted he had plenty of visitors but they would wind down music and party by 10. I’m obviously not returning the security deposit and I have his details to the local police. He’s blocked my number, but occasionally unblocks to abuse me (sic),” the landlord wrote on Reddit.

While some people thought that the landlord shouldn’t generalise because of one bad incident, many others supported him. Some even shared similar stories of tenants ruining their apartments after they were rented out. Have a look:

Finding a home in the Silicon Valley of India has now become as difficult as seeking a life partner. As the population dispersed during the pandemic with more remote work, rents fell and many apartments lay empty. However, with the worst of COVID behind us, the economy slowly stirred into action, and landlords now want to make up for all that lost revenue. Rents have doubled and landlords’ demands tread the strange, uncanny, and, sometimes, even bizarre route. In fact, if you’ve not done well for yourself, chances are you’ll be rejected at the “altar” of rentals! But then again, doing well does not guarantee a house.

What landlords want The LinkedIn profile must be stellar A prospective landlord asked a Bengaluru man for a LinkedIn profile, and also a written profile. “The profile has to be exemplary, with followers and enough work stints,” says a tenant who had to spruce up his profile. A big salary does not guarantee a home Google employee Ripu Daman Bhadoria was told that he was most likely to buy his own home and was thus not suitable as a tenant. A CV and CIBIL scores Gone are the days when a well-meaning neighbor brought a rental recommendation. Today, without a CIBIL score, and an impressive CV, there’s less likelihood of making the cut. Get a KYC first “Many owners ask the realtor to arrange for a KYC from the tenants even before the first inspection and tenants are obviously not thrilled,” says Pankaj Malhotra, a realtor. No children, only elderly folks, please Recently, a millennial couple with a toddler was refused a home, even though they ticked all the right boxes. Reason? The owner did not want a child as there was no play area. He also said that he preferred elderly folk as they meant less trouble. Not just Vaastu, luck plays a part For one home-owner, “dogs were unlucky,” or sometimes, the kundlis just did not match! Corporates are welcome, but not families! Having a corporate to rent one’s apartment or home is considered the best option among many Bengaluru landlords. “Higher rents and a general ease of doing business is the biggest reason,” says Khan. Be isolated, with no parties, and strictly no guests Increasingly, homeowners have strict stipulations on parties and guests walking in. If they live on the same premises, there are also restrictions on visitors. Only singles, no married folk Singles were once considered unwelcome tenants, but now the tides have turned, with some owners preferring singles, say real estate brokers. Landlords speak... Many landlords prefer corporates or singles as it was uncomplicated. Some of them say that often, tenants have left the home in shambles, dirty, with broken fixtures, etc. 30% - That’s the percentage by which rentals are up 1.5 million - MNC workers in Karnataka 3.9 % - That’s the rent yield for Bengaluru, which tops the list of cities in India
